GRESHAM, Ore.– The final race of her High School career was anything but a cake walk.
A familiar name in the hurdle event, with now three State Titles in the 110 meter hurdles after Saturday’s win, the 300 meter hurdles to close out her High School career was one race she medaled in once in her High School career.
That was last year with her sixth-place finish was the highest she placed at the State Meet, but coming out of the gates Saturday Trinity Phipps found herself in the front of the pack entering the first turn of the race.
But as soon as she hit the halfway mark, St. Mary’s of Medford Emma Bennion started to nip on Phipps heels coming down the front straightaway.
“It’s always a really tough race, the girl who won Emma Bennion is a total beast, she’s amazing. So I just wanted to stick with her and I had her until the last 50 meters or so when she crept past me,” said Phipps, who finished second in the race. “But I’m really happy with how I did. I left everything on the track, so I’m proud of myself.”
“It feels awesome. I just wanted to go out and lay everything I had out on the track and in the jumping pit and that’s what I did. I’m happy with my performance.”
The Senior PR’d in the 300 meter hurdles race with a time of 47.13 seconds as she adds a second-place finish to her State Championship Title in the 100 meter hurdles and in the Triple Jump.
Over the last two years entering this season, Phipps had finished sixth and third respectively and worked her way up the podium. The Cavailer hurdler and jumper credits Sophie Heyman, who graduated in 2018 as helping her along as she went to it by herself this season.
“It was pretty exciting. Last year my best friend, my jumping friend Sophie Heyman got second and third so with her gone I had to do it by myself this year. I was hoping to bump it up and I did,” said Phipps on the Triple Jump State Title.
Phipps also finished 11th in the Long Jump.
Ana Coronado took sixth in the 400 meter run. Emma Lutz was 12th in the 1,500 meter run. The 4×100 meter relay team of Karla Diaz Fregoso, Brianna Anaya, Kayla Greenwood and Ana Coronado took third. Kalea Salang took fifth in the shotput and third in the discus.
Shelby Gwyn was fourth in the Pole Vault. Breadan Tobias was a foot shy of placing with his ninth place throw of 43-feet-3-inches in the shot put.
